A bad repair: how to spot it before it’s too late

There’s nothing more frustrating than finding out that your car’s bodywork, freshly “repaired,” is actually hiding problems. Worse still: sometimes you only notice months later, when the paint starts to blister or the rust comes back.

At Débossatec, we see a lot of cars that got questionable “repairs.” And we get it: when it isn’t your trade, it’s hard to judge whether the work was done right. So here are a few signs to watch for to avoid nasty surprises.

1. Paint that doesn’t match exactly

At first glance, the car looks perfect. But in different light, or a few days later… something’s off. The colour doesn’t look the same from one panel to the next. That problem usually comes from:

  • the wrong colour variant (each paint code can have several shades),
  • an uneven application or a missing final coat,
  • or a rushed polishing job.

Good to know: At Débossatec, we use hand-painted spray-out cards to compare the shade against your vehicle before we paint. Because a good match has to be tested for real.

2. Sanding marks or dust under the clear coat

Little particles under the paint? Strange reflections, or a rough texture to the touch? Those are signs the final sanding or the cleaning was done badly before painting. And once it’s clear-coated… there’s no fixing it without starting over.

3. Misaligned parts

A door that’s hard to close, a hood that sticks out, a moulding that looks “crooked”? Those are usually parts that were installed or adjusted badly. And it isn’t just about looks: bad alignment can speed up wear or even cause water leaks.

4. Rust showing up fast

Rust should NOT come back after a few months. If it reappears quickly, it’s usually because:

  • the metal wasn’t sanded back to clean bare metal,
  • a hole was filled with body filler instead of being repaired properly,
  • or protective layers (primer, rustproofing, paint) were skipped.

Here, all our rust repairs carry a lifetime warranty — because done right, it’s supposed to last.

5. Strange noises or vibrations? Sometimes it’s just… put back together badly.

A creak when you open the door? A piece of plastic that rattles as you drive? A dull thud over every bump? That’s often a sign that clips or fasteners were forgotten or installed badly. A bumper that isn’t bolted on right, mouldings put back wrong, missing sound insulation… It isn’t mechanical, but it can take away from your comfort and from the quality of the work.

At Débossatec, every part goes back on with care, exactly the way it came from the factory.

What if you have a doubt?

Trust your gut. If something seems off, it’s worth getting a second opinion. At Débossatec, we can inspect your car and tell you plainly whether the work was done right — or whether some things need to be fixed.

And above all, deal with a shop that gives you clear warranties. A repair done right should hold up… without giving you nightmares six months later.

Conclusion

Perfect bodywork is more than shiny paint. It’s a matter of discipline, expertise and attention to detail. At Débossatec, we don’t do things halfway — and that’s why we can back our repairs with a lifetime warranty.
