As much as we love seeing flawless bodywork, the reality is that daily life is hard on our vehicles. A small scratch here, a paint chip there… The good news is you don’t always have to repaint a whole panel to deal with these little dings. Sometimes a simple touch-up by brush is the best solution. Here’s when (and how) it really makes a difference.
What is a touch-up by brush?
A touch-up by brush means putting a small amount of paint straight onto a scratch or a chip, to protect the metal and improve the look of the bodywork. We use paint matched exactly to the vehicle’s original colour, and a precision brush.
The goal isn’t necessarily a completely invisible repair (the way a full shop repair would be), but rather to stop the damage from spreading and tone down how much it shows.
When is it the best option?
A touch-up by brush is ideal in several situations:
- Small stone chips on the hood or the fenders
- Micro-scratches that don’t go through to the metal
- Scuffs from keys, purses or tight parking spots
- Rust starting at one specific spot (once the metal is treated)
If the damage is localized, shallow and doesn’t cover a large area, a touch-up by brush can be an excellent fix: fast, affordable and effective.
The advantages of a touch-up by brush
- Protection against rust: As soon as a scratch reaches the metal, oxidation starts. A touch-up keeps moisture from getting in.
- Affordable: Far cheaper than a full repair or a partial repaint.
- Keeps your vehicle looking cared for: Even if the touch-up isn’t always completely invisible up close, it greatly improves the overall look.
- Protects resale value: A well-kept vehicle always inspires more confidence.
Careful if you buy your own paint!
It can be tempting to pick up a little bottle of paint and do the touch-up yourself, but be careful: even if you find the colour code inside your door jamb, that’s no guarantee of a perfect match.
Here’s why:
- Each colour code can have several variants: the same code can give up to 12 slightly different shades depending on the production run, factory adjustments or how the paint has aged.
- Three-stage paints are even more complex: on a pearl white, for example, how much of the third coat goes on (the one that creates the pearl effect) has a huge impact on the final result.
- At Débossatec, we always check your colour in person: we compare your shade against custom cards painted by hand, to find the closest possible match.
- For complex colours, we even make a custom metal test card to confirm the match right on your vehicle.
A good touch-up starts with the right colour. Without that, even careful brush work is going to show.
How we do it at Débossatec
At Débossatec, we don’t do touch-ups "on the fly". We:
- Clean and carefully decontaminate the area to be repaired.
- Prep the surface so the paint bonds properly.
- Apply several thin coats of paint with a precision brush.
- Finish with a light localized polish if needed.
Our goal is to protect your investment, stop the damage from getting worse and give you a solution that fits your budget.
