The “brother-in-law job” story

At Débossatec, we like telling the stories behind our repairs. Because often it isn’t only a bodywork question, it’s also a lesson worth keeping. Here’s the one about a customer who brought us her vehicle after trying to deal with a small scratch… with her brother-in-law’s help.

An offer made in good faith

It all started with a scratch on the passenger side: from the left rear door to the right front fender. Nothing serious, but visible enough to bother the owner. Her brother-in-law, well-meaning and sure he could fix it, offered to take care of it.

The idea sounded good: why not settle it in the family, at no extra cost?

The “brother-in-law job” in action

Unfortunately, bodywork is a delicate art. Automotive paint takes specialized products, precise techniques and, above all… a lot of experience.

Instead of a simple touch-up, here’s what happened:

  • 🎨 Paint applied too wide: instead of covering only the affected area, the paint spread too high and too low.
  • 💨 Overspray with runs: paint particles settled everywhere, leaving marks and ugly runs.
  • 📏 A hard tape line: the masking tape left a sharp edge, visible and uneven.

Instead of hiding the scratch, the car now had an uneven finish that showed even more than before.

When the pros take over

So the customer came to see us at the shop. We took the time to assess the damage and explain what it would take to bring her car back to its original look.

Our team worked in three steps:

  1. 01A full cleanup to remove the excess paint and the damaged areas.
  2. 02Careful sanding to smooth the surface and prepare a flawless base.
  3. 03New professional paint, applied by the book, with an even, durable finish.

A few days later, we handed the keys back to the customer. The result: her car looked better than new — and it’s covered by our lifetime warranty! ✨

The moral of the story

This story isn’t unique. Plenty of customers think they’ll save time or money by handing their car to a friend, a neighbour… or a brother-in-law. But bodywork is a technical trade that takes expertise.

👉 A bad touch-up can cost more to correct than the original damage.

👉 And it can lower your vehicle’s resale value.

So as nice and as helpful as the people around you are, leave your repairs to a specialized shop. It’s the best way to protect your investment and drive away in a vehicle that’s flawless.
