Top 5 rust myths: true or false?

In Quebec, rust is a real scourge for vehicles. Between road salt, humidity and swings in temperature, our cars are constantly at risk. Yet plenty of myths are still going around, and they can lead to expensive decisions (or to damage that could have been avoided). Let’s clear up 5 common beliefs about rust, once and for all.

Myth 1: "My car is new, so it’s protected against rust"

❌ False.

A lot of people think new cars are fully protected at the factory. It’s true that many models get a surface treatment, but that protection is often minimal or incomplete. And it isn’t designed for Quebec’s extreme conditions. Without regular maintenance or preventive treatment, even a new car can rust within a few years.

✅ What we recommend at Débossatec: rustproofing (like our semi-permanent grease) in the first year, then regular follow-up to protect the investment over the long term.

Myth 2: "A hole means the vehicle is done"

❌ False.

Finding perforating rust can be discouraging, but it isn’t always the end. In many cases, professional work can stop it from spreading, repair the metal and give the vehicle its value back.

✅ At Débossatec: we assess the severity first. If the frame and the structural points are solid, a cosmetic or functional repair is entirely possible. And above all: every one of our rust repairs carries a lifetime warranty. Yes, you read that right. If the rust comes back where we repaired it, we redo it free.

Myth 3: "Washing makes a car rust"

❌ False… with some nuance.

Some people think washing your vehicle in winter raises the risk of rust. In reality, not washing it is far riskier. Road salt gets in everywhere – wheels, rocker panels, the underbody – and starts corroding surfaces as soon as it meets moisture.

✅ Our advice: wash regularly, especially in winter, with particular attention to the underbody. At Débossatec, our wash covers the fender liners, the trunk edges and the little corners everyone forgets.

Myth 4: "Paint completely prevents rust"

❌ False.

Paint does protect, yes. But a simple scratch or chip can expose bare metal to moisture. And once rust starts, it can spread under the paint without anyone seeing it.

✅ The fix: inspect your vehicle regularly, especially after winter. A quick touch-up, a polish or a sealant can make all the difference.

Myth 5: "Once it’s treated, my car is protected forever"

❌ False.

Even the best treatments have a lifespan. Road abrasion, pressure washing, the climate... all of it wears the protection down over time. Thinking rustproofing is "for life" is a common mistake.

✅ What we do at Débossatec: we use a semi-permanent grease that protects for several years, but we still recommend an annual inspection. After 4 treatments, our customers don’t need to come back – but staying alert is still in order.

In short:
