Introduction
Between the salt of our Quebec winters, the summer dust on Highway 20 and the small surprises of city life, your car takes a beating. The good news: a few good habits are enough to protect its factory shine and its resale value. Here are our five best tips, simple enough to start today.
1. Wash it often… but above all, wash it right
A weekly wash is good. A methodical wash is better. At Débossatec, we use a microfibre “tentacle” mitt that lifts dirt instead of rubbing it into the paint, and we work from the roof down to the rockers so we don’t drag sand back up. Always finish with a good medium-pressure rinse and a chamois-and-compressed-air dry to chase the water out of the crevices.
Bonus: use a pH-neutral shampoo; it cleans without attacking the wax or the sealant.
2. Protect the paint with a synthetic sealant
A good coat of wax adds gloss, but a synthetic sealant builds a longer-lasting shield against UV, calcium and acid rain. Two applications a year – in the spring and before winter – are usually enough. You’ll cut the risk of oxidation and make future washes easier, because dirt sticks less.
3. Park strategically
The best maintenance is still prevention. Pick a shaded spot to limit sun fading, and leave room between your vehicle and the next one so doors don’t swing into it. Downtown, go for indoor parking rather than the street during snow-removal operations; your bodywork will thank you.
4. Deal with chips, dents and scratches fast
A small chip on the hood can rust within weeks if it’s left bare. Get it touched up quickly so it doesn’t spread. Same idea for a dent: paintless dent repair (cold dent removal) is quick and inexpensive if you act before the primer cracks.
5. Take care of the interior
Spotless bodywork isn’t the whole story; keep the inside in perfect shape too:
- Vacuum every week, especially the mats, where calcium builds up.
- Put a UV protectant on the dashboard so it doesn’t crack.
- Keep a microfibre cloth in the glovebox to wipe up spills as soon as they happen.
A clean interior keeps moisture, odours and premature wear on materials in check.
Conclusion
Taking care of your car doesn’t take a mountain of products or hours of work; it takes a consistent routine. Follow these five tips and you’ll hold on to your vehicle’s looks and its value longer, while getting a fresh-off-the-lot look every morning.
