Used, aftermarket or original parts: how to choose the right ones for your car

When it’s time to repair a vehicle after an accident, one question comes up again and again: which parts are we going to use? It isn’t always easy for a customer to follow. Yet each type of part has its advantages, and above all, its right and wrong uses.

At Débossatec, we make those calls carefully — and above all with years of experience in knowing when and why to use each type of part. The goal is to give you a repair that’s safe, durable and good-looking, with no bad surprises.

Here’s a simple guide to help you understand the differences.

1. Used parts (recycled or second-hand)

These are original (OEM) parts, but taken from vehicles that were in an accident or at the end of their life. They can include doors, fenders, bumpers, mirrors and so on.

✅ When it’s a good choice:

  • When the part is in good shape and rust-free
  • To save on the price of a new original part

⚠️ Avoid them for:

  • Used parts should be avoided for structural components like pillars, rails or crossmembers, because their integrity can’t be guaranteed; a structural part may have taken stress or an impact you can’t see with the naked eye.
  • Safety parts, like impact absorbers, radiator supports or welded components
  • Anything already rusted, dented or repaired

2. “Jobber” parts: all the same? Not at all.

The term jobber covers every non-original part, made by companies other than the vehicle’s manufacturer. That isn’t automatically bad — but the quality varies enormously.

There are three broad categories of jobber parts:

🟥 Non-certified parts (low end)

These parts are often the most affordable on the market, but they can come with certain limitations in fit, materials and durability.

⚠️ Things to keep in mind:

  • Fit is sometimes imprecise, which can stretch out the installation
  • Thinner metal or softer plastic
  • Less resistant to rust and impacts
  • Cheaper up front, but sometimes more labour time to get a good result

💡 At Débossatec, we generally prefer certified or original parts, especially when finish quality or durability matter.

🟧 CAPA-certified parts

CAPA (Certified Automotive Parts Association) is an independent body that verifies:

  • Fit
  • Durability
  • Material strength

These parts are often a good alternative to OEM parts, especially for bumpers, fenders, hoods or panels that aren’t safety-critical.

💡 At Débossatec, we go with CAPA parts when we want a good balance between price and quality.

🟨 Platinum Plus parts

Platinum Plus parts, distributed by Keystone, are built to deliver high-level fit and durability, comparable to CAPA-certified parts.

🔧 What sets them apart: they come with a warranty on the part and on the labour, a real plus for the customer and for the shop alike.

💡 It’s a very reliable option, often a better deal than CAPA in some cases, especially when the full warranty adds value to the project.

3. New original parts (OEM)

These are exactly the same parts that were installed at the factory.

✅ The premium choice:

  • Perfect fit, no modification needed
  • Flawless finish
  • Durable materials, tested for safety

🚨 The only catch: the price. They’re often a lot more expensive. We use them mainly for:

  • Warranty repairs
  • Safety parts (impact absorbers, radiator supports, front crossmember, etc.)
  • Customers who want the best, no compromises

So… which parts do we use at Débossatec?

👉 The short answer: it depends. We always look at:

  • The type of part
  • How bad the damage is
  • Your budget

Our priority: clean, safe, durable work, without dragging out the timeline or making you pay for nothing. And above all, we always explain what we’re using and why.

💡 The right choice always depends on the situation. At Débossatec, we take the time to assess each case so we can offer you the best possible option, openly.
