You spot a dent on your car, you stop by the shop for an estimate… and you fall off your chair: $1,000? Meanwhile your neighbour paid barely $100 for a similar dent. What’s going on? Is the price being padded? Not necessarily.
At Débossatec, we hear that question often, and it’s a fair one. Here’s a look at the factors that explain why the cost of a dent repair can run from a few hundred dollars to more than a thousand.
1. Where the dent is
A dent on a smooth door is usually easier to fix than a dent on the corner of a bumper or next to a body crease. When the dent sits in a hard-to-reach area, or on a reinforced part of the vehicle, the work can get much longer and more complex.
2. The size… and above all the depth
Two dents of the same diameter don’t always do the same damage. A small dent can be very deep, can have stretched the metal or even cracked the paint. And the more underlying damage there is, the more time and advanced technique the repair takes.
3. Type of dent repair: with or without paint
Paintless dent repair (commonly called PDR – Paintless Dent Removal) is often faster and cheaper… if conditions allow. But as soon as there’s a chip, a crack or a scratch in the paint, you have to sand, repaint, re-clear and even run it through the bake oven. That’s a completely different price category.
4. Tool access
In plenty of cases, we have to take out an interior trim, pull a panel or remove mechanical parts to reach the dent from behind. That’s extra labour time you can’t always see with the naked eye.
5. The vehicle’s materials and technology
Modern cars use a whole range of materials: high-strength steel, aluminum, composites… Some take longer to work, others call for specialized tools. Straightening an aluminum fender, for example, often takes more time than the same job on traditional steel.
6. Finish standards
Not every body shop works the same way. At Débossatec, we make sure the repair is invisible, durable and up to the manufacturer’s standards. That takes time, care and expertise. A "quick" job may cost less… but it also gives very different results.
In short…
Every dent is different, and the price reflects not just the time and complexity of the work, but also the quality of the final result.
